From turning the television off standby and switching those lights off when you leave the room, to simply turning down your temperature gauge by 1°C, can all help to save energy.  All these tips will save you money and cost you nothing to do.  Have a shower, rather than taking a bath and leave the shower a few minutes earlier.  If you are aware that you have drafts under your door or around your windows, then roll a blanket or a towel under the doorway and shut those curtains when dusk approaches.  Remind each other to put a cardigan on or an extra layer just to keep warm, before you sub-consciously light the fire or switch on the central heating.  If you have a real fire, get the kids to go out walking, collect a few branches that have fallen from the trees and use those or burn logs instead of coal.  Not only will you be saving energy, but the kids will also be using energy, resulting in an early night, leaving you to enjoy the reward of the fire.  What a result!
